I have specialized training in working with youth, teens and young adults using unique techniques that help draw out the expressive nature, strength and confidence in people. I guide young people and help them flourish and prosper as they transition into the next phase of their life.

I have a special gift for establishing rapport and inspiring confidence in my clients.

YOUNG ADULT COUNSELLING

As your counsellor I will help you gain a deeper understanding of your thoughts and feelings, provide you with strategies to effectively cope with stress, and help you identify what it is that you truly want and need.

I can also help you identify patterns, behaviours and unresolved issues that could be interfering with your happiness and achievement of your personal goals.

In a safe and non-judgmental setting, we will collaborate to explore both areas of strength and aspects of your life that you would like to improve.

Essentially, through therapy, we can explore strategies to help you achieve your goals and begin making impactful changes in your life.

Each individual I work with has his/her/their own unique needs, so I tailor treatment according to your need.

With my support you can work toward the growth you want to realize in your life.

TEEN COUNSELLING

Is your teenage child struggling to function at school, home or in society? Have you noticed a concerning change in your teenager’s emotional stability or behavior? Is your teen experiencing mood swings and/or behavioural changes? Does your teenager have difficulty managing stress and life responsibilities? Do you wonder if your teen may be suicidal? Are you worried your teen may not make it through adolescence to become a healthy, functional adult? Do you wish you better understood your teen’s experience and had the skills and support to help him or her work through the challenging teenage years? I can help with the above issues. As your teen’s therapist, I will teach them to develop the skills needed to understand themselves better and cope with difficult/overwhelming emotions in ways that are healthy and empowering.

I also aim to build awareness and reflection in teens to help them see how their behaviour affects others in their lives.

Through my work, your teen will have a better understanding of who they are and will develop an improved self-esteem at an age where identity and self-worth are constantly being tested.

CHILDREN 4 years old and up:

Counselling can help your child feel more confident in and out of school, reduce negative behavior and improve coping skills.

I will help your child to explore and resolve problems through the use of therapeutic play therapy.

Play therapy is helpful to children in numerous ways, including:

Helping to heal from past stressful and traumatic experiences. Allowing for the expression of feelings. Encouraging creative thoughts and new ideas. Allowing the development of healthy decision-making skills. Enabling the communication of problems and concerns to others. Supporting the learning of new ways of thinking and behaving. I can help your child with the following issues:

Behavioral problems like excessive anger, acting out, bedwetting, or eating disorders. Grades in school dropping significantly, especially if the child usually maintains high grades. Episodes of sadness, tearfulness, or depression. Becoming socially withdrawn or isolated. Being the victim of bullying or bullying other children. Showing aggressive behaviour, such as biting, kicking, or hitting. Developing or increasing physical complaints, such as headaches, stomach-aches or not feeling well in general, even with a normal physical exam by the doctor. My goal is to create space for you to honour who you are, where you come from and what you’ve been through. With the right support, you can develop a greater sense of calm so you can make choices that bring more joy and pride into your daily life, including relationships.

I’m here to help you find those missing pieces. As we sit together, we’ll explore your experiences in depth and identify patterns that no longer serve you. We’ll work on shifting your responses to difficult situations so you can build a better connection to self, while also strengthening your connection to others.

For more than five years, I have worked in public health helping people struggling with mental health concerns. Now, I have spent two years shifting to direct individual counselling. I have seen first hand the long-term benefits of counselling, myself, when I began as a client in my youth. The lifelong lessons I learned didn’t shape me: They helped me shape myself into who I wanted to be, and to live the life I wanted. That’s why I’m excited about this work. I am dedicated to helping my clients overcome their barriers through a collection of perspectives and techniques, and my hope is to empower them to reclaim the parts of them they once enjoyed.

Especially in these times, you may feel there’s an underlying feeling of loneliness and isolation that seems to follow you wherever you go. You may long for deeper connection in your relationships, but you just can’t seem to find the right people or circles where you feel at ease. No matter how hard you try, it feels like there’s something missing. But even by reading this, you’ve taken a step forward. Let’s keep that momentum going, and move even further forward together.

My work includes:

– In-person Individual Counselling for Adults and Youth

– Virtual Individual Counselling for Adults and Youth

– Group Counselling for Adults

My approaches include:

– Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy

– Internal Family Systems

– Person-Centred

– Multi-modal Style

My work is informed by the idea that all problems are about relationships: With Self, with Other, or with some aspect of the environment. When these relationships are working, we feel a genuine sense of wellness but when any one of these relationships are fractured in some way, our sense of well being is threatened and we will begin to see symptoms physically, emotionally, and/or in our relationships.

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with 20 years of experience working with couples and individuals (including adolescents). I have worked in a school setting, in clinic settings, as well as in private practice.

My experience includes:

I offer help by using a variety of different methods, focusing on the body, mind, and spirit, all done in the context of a professional and respectful relationship.

My goal is to use my training and experience to offer as many of these opportunities as possible to the people I work with.

As a Registered Clinical Counsellor, (BCACC #932), I have over 30 years experience in the counselling field.

I work with individuals and couples, with the elderly and youth, with diverse populations and welcome clients with of all backgrounds.

As well as my main employed work, I also did extensive volunteer work with the refugee community helping establish an agency (VAST) offering counselling to refugees who have undergone trauma.

I specialize in helping people with:

Survivors of physical and sexual abuse

First Nation’s people who are survivors of residential schools

Refugees suffering from the effects of trauma.

In the work that I do I help people find and appreciate and use the strengths that they already have and assist them in creating further resources for themselves. I support people having compassion for their struggles and to see the meaning of the current difficulties in the context of their life journey. When opportunities present I use the immediate interactions in the room to clarify issues and encourage growth by practicing new behaviours. I support people to learn from their body’s reactions as often these are the most honest and can remind us of parts of ourselves we may have been taught to reject or deny. I strive to listen and understand and provide the best support that I can but also acknowledge inevitable misunderstandings.

I trained in Gestalt Therapy for a number of years and was later a member of the faculty of the Gestalt Experiential Training Institute. I was trained and had over three years of supervision in working with couples using a model developed by UBC professor Dr. John Friesen which he called Experiential Systemic Marriage and Family Therapy. Later, I continued my learning by participating in approximately ten years of weekly supervision using a model called Integrative Psychotherapy developed by Richard Erskine. I have also completed training in another model working with couples called Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy developed by Dr. Sue Johnson. I have completed the two levels of training in EMDR a very popular approach used mainly in working with trauma. A common element in many of my trainings has been using experiential techniques to explore and work through issues.

My Approach

Clients often describe my approach as warm and supportive. I am deeply passionate about guiding individuals, couples, and families towards growth and self-discovery. My work is rooted in building a profound connection between all parts of our being – our physical body, emotional body, mind, and spirit. Drawing upon the wisdom of the body, I strive to create balance among these elements to foster a sense of wholeness – an approach inherent to integrative and somatic therapy.

Recognizing that our bodies may bear the imprints of past experiences and believing in the power of emotions as messengers, I am certified in both Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and as a Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP). This dual certification equips me to guide my clients through the process of changing how they hold their past.

I also incorporate evidence-based approaches into my work. Mindfulness-based Cognitive-behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and narrative therapy are all integral parts of my practice. These approaches provide valuable tools and strategies for managing thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, facilitating personal growth and positive change.

As an expressive Art therapy practitioner, I understand the transformative potential of creative expression. I believe in the innate creativity within each individual and the power of movement and artistic mediums to unlock self-expression and self-realization.

Couples:

Working with couples is a particular passion of mine. Relationships are a vital resource for growth, and I am dedicated to helping couples navigate challenges, rebuild trust, and foster healthy and fulfilling connections. I specialize in working with Attachment-based Interventions for couples in crisis, addressing relationship issues, moving past the trauma of betrayal and infidelity, marriage, and divorce.

Families:

I also value working with families and am certified in emotionally focused family therapy (EFFT), where we restore connection, unlock emotional expression, and transform negative patterns of interaction within the family system.

I also have expertise in supporting Parenting Neurodivergent Youth in Social Emotional and Regulation Strategies (ADD, ADHD)

Areas of Expertise:

My practice encompasses a wide range of issues and demographics. I work with individuals, couples, and families, offering support for concerns such as relationship issues, life transitions, trauma, ADHD, ADD, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideations, body image, loss and grief.

I am passionate about providing a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ individuals and couples and have expertise in working with diverse cultural backgrounds.

Who I am

I am Nogol, a multi-cultural individual, shaped by two cultures, two worlds. I embarked on my journey from Iran to Canada by myself, facing many challenges and making numerous choices to deal with these challenges – each serving as a stepping stone to my growth and resilience. These experiences kindled a deep understanding within me of life’s transitions, the healing process, and the powerful sway of emotions.

I value the wisdom of our bodies, the transformative power of support in our journeys, and our innate ability to reframe the way we relate to our past.

Before finding my path in counselling, I worked in the domain of immigration, offering consultation to over 600 individuals and couples as they navigated the emotional turmoil of the immigration process. My work was centered around helping them make sense of their strong emotions related to change, assisting them in finding a sense of belonging in their new world, and supporting their smooth transition.

In addition to my present training in a Master of Art in Counseling Psychology, I bring a diverse academic background to my practice. I hold an MBA with a focus on human motivation. Furthermore, I have undergone specialized trauma-informed training at Rhodes Wellness College to obtain my Professional Counsellor Diploma, Certified Wellness Counsellor, and Accredited Life Coach certificate.

I deeply value the process of therapy because it made a huge difference in my own life. I’ve been there, and I know it takes bravery to ask for support. Thank you for being here and reading about who I am. These sessions are for you, and I can’t wait to get to know you and start this precious process together.

My background over the last 17 years includes positions in management and counselling in a variety of mental health, University and business settings.

My approach to counselling is primarily cognitive behavioural in orientation with my focus concentrating on the present and future. I believe that it is important to have an understanding of the past but this insight in and of itself does not necessarily lead to change. My goal is to equip my clients with problem solving strategies and techniques that they can apply in the here and now. I usually provide homework such as practicing relaxation, guided imagery, or assertiveness techniques. I also use EMDR in my practice when appropriate to help a client unblock various traumas which may be negatively impacting on their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

Dr. Avrum Miller aims focus in counselling is to validate and normalize my client’s experiences, encourage them to verbalize their feelings, mobilize their internal and external resources, identify their issues and provide them with tools to manage their symptoms effectively. I see counselling as a collaborative process in which my clients and I are a team working towards a common goal.

My greatest passion is assisting individuals to remember and reclaim who they truly are – their unique strengths, knowledge, abilities, potential, and purpose in this life. In fact, it is my mission. I serve as a catalyst or activator to help “wake you up” and disrupt the false beliefs that have held you back.

You may be feeling stuck, frustrated, overwhelmed, exhausted, and perhaps even a little hopeless. Life may feel endlessly centered around suffering or like a daily exercise in the art of survival. Deep within however, you know there is much more for you. Do not be discouraged! As someone who has walked this path, I am well equipped to show you how to navigate it.

Together, we will explore the context and origins of the problem. We will identify your goals and the specifics of what you would like to see change. We will take an inventory of your coping skills, supports, and resources and expand where necessary. We will explore your abilities to manage and process difficult emotions and I will help you add to your skill set. We will identify your core beliefs about yourself and the nature of the world and I will show you how to challenge and replace unhelpful thoughts. I will also help you improve your connection to your body and tap into the wisdom it holds. If you have a spiritual belief system that enriches your life, we will incorporate that into our work as well. I believe a comprehensive and holistic approach best lends itself to significant and long-lasting change.

My work draws on training and studies in:

Narrative Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Focusing-Oriented/Somatic Therapy

When overwhelmed by feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression, we can become disconnected from our inner experience and knowing. We can also feel disconnected from others and the world around us. This can be confusing and deeply painful.

I work with the idea that all behavior has purpose and meaning. It is my great privilege to work in collaboration with others and support the development of self-compassion and understanding as a way through to healing and growth.

My intention is to create a warm and encouraging environment that provides people with genuine opportunities for reflection, insight, and positive change.

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with several years of experience working with children, adolescents, families and individuals.

I have worked with a wide spectrum of clinical issues including:

Anxiety related disorders Depression Family of origin issues Self-harming behaviors Sexual abuse Trauma My work with adults: I combine psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral strategies with body-based experiencing techniques to increase an individual’s mind-body awareness. The body possesses infinite resources and provides essential information to guide healing and growth. I work collaboratively with individuals to access these rich resources and create new perspective about past learning and its impact upon present experience.

I use several techniques that complement each other; all of which tap into the wisdom of the body and mind.

These include:

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Sensorimotor Pyschotherapy Lifespan Integration Therapy Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Expressive Therapy Grounding and relaxation My work with children and adolescents: When working with children and teens I focus on the developmental and emotional issues underlying specific behaviors. I use a number of techniques to help a child express feelings (often indirectly) using toys, colouring, games, sandplay, dolls, storytelling, pretending and other activities best suited to the developmental level of the child. Play therapy incorporates the child’s imagination in play. Observation of this play informs directed counselling strategies and assists children to identify difficult feelings and relieve distress.

Adolescents will often engage in more traditional talk therapy, but specific expressive techniques may be used to help create a more comfortable setting for the teen to relate to and develop trust in counseling. Once this is established they can begin to understand their feelings, learn new ways of coping, and improve self-esteem.

My work with parents and community partners: I also help support parents and caregivers involved in the child’s life as these relationships are integral to the child’s therapy and healing process. Together we develop various parenting strategies to help the child, and parents, overcome the issues at hand. When appropriate I collaborate with school professionals and other community partners to gather information and suggest ways for them to be involved in the child or teen’s process.

I am trained to facilitate parenting groups (STEP) and provide personalized parenting coaching.

In therapy sessions we will explore the hurdles that hold you back from having the quality of life you desire. My focus is to guide you towards a deeper level of change. We do this by exploring the patterns keeping you stuck, beliefs that limit you, and thoughts that cause you distress. Often these patterns are rooted in your past experiences. Therefore, the process becomes one of establishing meaningful relationships that generate mutual trust and a sense of safety.

While I draw upon a variety of theories, I maintain a thread of continuity in who I am, and how I make sense of my clients. Personally, I have a long relationship with mindfulness/meditation and psychotherapy integration to best serve my clients. I use mindfulness psychotherapy integration as the base of my work with clients. It is an effective tool to build self-awareness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Additionally, I am well learned in theology—I understand the 5 major religions of the world—and work to understand clients in relation to different systems and the impact of these systems on well-being. What works for some may not work for others, and in my work with you, we will highlight the areas where you show strength and resilience.

In order to better support you, I use skill-based strategies through a thoughtful integration of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness. I have extensive specialized training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and DBT groups, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Cognitive Behavioral therapy, including ACT and Changeways groups.

I am dedicated to evidence-based practice and treatments, and I am committed to providing compassionate, validating, and effective counselling services to adults, youths and their families, decision makers, and health care professionals.

My focus is helping clients develop skills related to accepting difficult life circumstances, making changes, analyzing behaviours, and learning healthier patterns of responding.
