For over fifteen years I worked in visual arts education and exhibitions at museums and galleries in Vancouver. In these roles, I learned the power of observation—of looking for ruptures and incongruences to better understand the meaning beneath the surface of what we think we see and know. Working with large and diverse groups of adults and youth, I would facilitate sometimes difficult conversations about a wide scope of issues and concerns, often taking a global perspective. My previous graduate study focused on the visual expression of various types of trauma embedded in the process of colonization, war, and addressing cultural difference.
Together, we will form a plan that is tailored to your needs as an individual, drawing from a variety of approaches that have been shown to be effective at creating change. From mindfulness to body-based therapies to a deep examination of family history through patterns and repetitions, we will work to increase your awareness and use helpful tools and strategies to manage life’s challenges and transitions.
Our relationships and interpersonal connections, both at home and at work, are critical markers of our identity, sense of self, and place in the world. They can serve as blueprints for our conflicts and challenges—for everything that feels wrong with us. But they can also be a place of support, growth, and connection. Using a strengths-based approach, I work on a variety of issues, from relationship challenges and conflicts to anxiety and depression, that can stem from trauma and early attachment issues. I welcome the opportunity to work with you, inviting you into a safe space to more deeply examine the areas of your life that feel difficult, misunderstood, and challenging to speak about.

I have spent a great deal of time working within the health and wellness realm, as well as the field of psychological sciences and mental wellbeing. Through previous work, I have diversified experiences collaborating with children, youth, and young adults in both an educational and social setting, as well as exploring developmental research as an assistant in a cognitive development lab. My personal experiences with therapy as well as my passion for wellness, healing and connecting with others propelled my own reflective journey and my desire to work within this field as a counsellor.
Through previous work experience with Direct Neurofeedback, I am a strong advocate for the mind-body connection and exploring how trauma and various stressors present themselves physiologically. Having a background in dance, yoga, and athletics, I am also passionate about the interplay of movement and psychological well-being within the healing process. Outside of the therapeutic space, I enjoy physical fitness and wellness, trying out new food and cafes, and spending time with friends and family.

I recognize that newly entering the therapeutic environment can be a daunting experience. Throughout our time together, I will be with you every step of the way – prioritizing your emotional safety and providing your optimal space for growth and healing. No two therapy sessions are the same and as such, the treatment process and our time together will be tailored to your individualized needs and goal trajectories. Woven into my therapeutic approach is a trauma informed, strengths-based and culturally aware framework in which your unique story and experiences drive our sessions.
I practice from an integrative theoretical lens, with an emphasis on humanistic and person-centred approaches. I often incorporate elements of the following into my work while also pulling from other modalities if seen fit…
Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Internal Family Systems (IFS) Attachment Theory Somatic Therapy Mindfulness Individualistic client needs are at the centre of my work, and I believe in continuously adapting and shaping the therapeutic process to best align with you. I believe that if you are reading this, you are already on your healing journey.
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor and I help individuals who are struggling with the human experience, including issues such as stress and anxiety, depression and mood issues, relationship issues including boundaries and communication, grief and loss, existential crises, and difficult or transitional life events. My personal experiences with motherhood, trauma, Post-Concussion Syndrome and navigating relationship challenges have fuelled my passion for therapeutic work and healing.
I am deeply aware of the importance of connection and belonging, especially when one is struggling, and bring this awareness into my work as a Clinical Counsellor. I strive to provide a safe container and a neutral space to process all of life’s experiences. I would describe my current therapeutic approach as primarily person-centred; trauma, attachment and nervous system (polyvagal) informed; accepting of all identities and experiences; and collaborative in nature. I have a background in dance, yoga and meditation and honour the mind-body connection as it relates to healing.

Hi, I’m Julia, Welcome! Thank you for reaching out.
I have a worldview lens given my 18 years of experience while practicing in South Africa, USA, and Canada including Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Smithers and Houston.
I believe in the importance of a safe place where you can feel heard, and respected. I view healing as a journey of returning or coming to a state where one feels safe, integrated and connected to their inner and outer world.
I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC#9429) with a Master of Science Degree in Counselling Psychology and Certified in Marriage and Family Therapy.
My approach is drawn from a range of evidence-based approaches, and worldview experiences which allows me to adapt my lens in response to what your needs are. I am dedicated to holding an open, friendly and inclusive space for you to feel safe and share your story.
Counselling allows us to look at our vulnerabilities with courage, create deeper meaning in life and live life with confidence and fulfillment. In our work together, you may learn to cope more effectively when conflict arises, create more fulfilling relationships and learn how to communicate about your needs.
My practice is built on an integrated social justice model, and I have a rich history of activism against racism and discrimination to ensure inclusivity of marginalized clients.
Counselling can be scary; I do respectfully approach the challenging issues; and we will work as a team to work towards your goals and encourage growth as a journey. Confidentiality and trust are an integral part of my clinical practice.
I have also been involved and have worked extensively in the Theatre Performing Arts where I danced, taught and choreographed dance professionally in the USA, working and a graduate of The Alvin Aily Dance School in New York, choreographer for the Dance Department at SCSU University, and the Artistic Director of the Children’s Multicultural Arts Connection.

In our work together, I support you to take a compassionate and curious look at your inner world of thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and memories. I teach you tools to loosen the grip of old narratives, unhelpful thought patterns and negative self-beliefs. As part of the healing journey, I take a look at how your earliest experiences and relationships shaped them. Along the way, I identify values, set goals and move you towards a more joyful and meaningful life.
I have experience working with:
Anxiety and stress Depression Trauma Phobias Marriage and Relationship issues Anger management Boundary setting Self-esteem and personal growth Major life transitions Multicultural issues, re-settlement, and integration issues for new immigrants I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor, and I have a Master’s of Counselling Psychology from the University of British Colombia (UBC) and a Masters of Business Administration. I work with individual adults and couples. I have been married for 30 years and am a mother of three grown children.
I look forward to meeting you and working with you.
Individuals
With individual clients, my therapeutic approach is rooted in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Brainspotting (Level 3), and Emotional Focused Therapy. I also use Sensorimotor Psychotherapy—a type of therapy that relies on the bodily experiences of the individual as a gateway to awareness and improved mental health. My work includes Internal Family Systems (IFS) and corrective experience (AEDP). I tailor the treatment based on specific needs, preferences, and comfort level of my clients.
Couples
With couples I draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)—which identifies the negative cycles couples get trapped in—and from Internal Family Systems (IFS). I also use Gottman Couples Therapy, which provides a road map as well as practical techniques to help clients improve relationships. In my many years of marriage, these modalities assisted my partner and I in finding each other over and over again and co-create the relationship we relish.

In my practice, I work collaboratively with clients in defining problems and developing solutions. My purpose is to help you gain a clearer understanding of what is true and necessary for you while providing guidance and support in working toward change.
My clinical practice incorporates twenty-five years of training and experience in the treatment of:
Anxiety, depression, trauma and phobia Eating and other behaviour disorders Grief and loss Parenting challenges Couple’s Counselling In my work with individuals, I incorporate the therapeutic benefits of Mindfulness with both Cognitive-Behavioural and Somatic Experiencing therapies. I believe that all of us have an innate ability to heal our emotional wounds. My experience has shown me that when we attend to both the mind and the body in the healing process, desired change can occur much faster and with greater ease. These changes are experienced immediately as well as over the long-term.
I am trained in various treatment modalities including Dynamic Attachment Repatterning Experience (DARe) (see www.drdianepooleheller.com) and Observed and Experiential Integration (OEI) (see www.sightpsych.com).
As well as individual therapy, I work with couples to help them achieve and maintain a more meaningful connection with one another. Fifteen years of marriage has made me ever more sensitive to the stresses and changes that can negatively impact a committed relationship. From minor tune-ups to major problems, I have found the Bader -Pearson Developmental Model to be invaluable. Using this model as a road map, I am able to guide couples toward a deeper understanding of the root causes of their conflicts and, at the same time, provide concrete and effective methods to more easily deal with them.
I welcome any inquiries into my services!

In therapy sessions we will explore the hurdles that hold you back from having the quality of life you desire. My focus is to guide you towards a deeper level of change. We do this by exploring the patterns keeping you stuck, beliefs that limit you, and thoughts that cause you distress. Often these patterns are rooted in your past experiences. Therefore, the process becomes one of establishing meaningful relationships that generate mutual trust and a sense of safety.
While I draw upon a variety of theories, I maintain a thread of continuity in who I am, and how I make sense of my clients. Personally, I have a long relationship with mindfulness/meditation and psychotherapy integration to best serve my clients. I use mindfulness psychotherapy integration as the base of my work with clients. It is an effective tool to build self-awareness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Additionally, I am well learned in theology—I understand the 5 major religions of the world—and work to understand clients in relation to different systems and the impact of these systems on well-being. What works for some may not work for others, and in my work with you, we will highlight the areas where you show strength and resilience.
In order to better support you, I use skill-based strategies through a thoughtful integration of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness. I have extensive specialized training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and DBT groups, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Cognitive Behavioral therapy, including ACT and Changeways groups.
I am dedicated to evidence-based practice and treatments, and I am committed to providing compassionate, validating, and effective counselling services to adults, youths and their families, decision makers, and health care professionals.
My focus is helping clients develop skills related to accepting difficult life circumstances, making changes, analyzing behaviours, and learning healthier patterns of responding.
Professional Experience
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC). I received my Masters in Clinical Counselling Psychology from City University of Seattle-Edmonton Campus and Bachelor of Child and Youth Care (BCYC) from McEwan University. I am also a member of Child and Youth Care Association of Alberta (CYCAA).
I have a decade of experience-working at Unlimited Potential Community Services (UP) and Oak Hill Ranch intensive group homes for children and youth. The intensive group homes have several houses with programs focusing on fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), mental health, adolescent males with histories of sexual trauma, and intensive high needs.
I spent the greater part of 2021 working with five Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools before switching to working with adults.
I find connecting with children and youth is made easier by being a parent myself. Depending on the youth, I may use sports or board games to create safe environment for these individuals to express themselves.
